What is MOT for heteronuclear diatomic molecule & how to explain it

Here, we will discuss how to write EC for heteronuclear diatomic molecule. We will also how to calculate bond order of NO, CO molecules and NO+, NO-, CO+ ions

What is bond order of NO heteronuclear diatomic molecule

  1. Total number of electrons in NO = 7 ( N ) + 8 ( O ) = 15 e-
  2. EC for NO = KK sigma 2s2, sigma* 2s2, sigma 2pz2, pi2px2, pi2py2, pi*2px1
  3. Bond order of NO = 1/2 ( 8 – 3 ) = 2.5
  4. EC for NO+ = KK sigma 2s2, sigma* 2s2, sigma 2pz2, pi2px2, pi2py2
  5. Bond order of NO+ = 1/2 ( 8 -2 ) = 3
  6. EC for NO- = KK sigma 2s2, sigma* 2s2, sigma 2pz2, pi2px2, pi2py2, pi*2px2
  7. Bond order of NO = 1/2 ( 8 -4 ) = 2

What is bond order of CO diatomic molecule

  1. Total number of electrons in CO = 6 ( C ) + 8 ( O ) = 14 e-
  2. EC for CO = KK sigma 2s2, sigma* 2s2, sigma 2pz2, pi2px2, pi2py2
  3. Bond order of CO = 1/2 ( 8 – 2 ) = 3
  4. EC for CO+ = KK sigma 2s2, sigma* 2s2, sigma 2pz2, pi2px2, pi2py1
  5. Bond order of CO+ = 1/2 ( 7 – 2 ) = 2.5
  6. But the actual bond order of CO+ = 3.5

What is bond order of CN- ion

  1. Total number of electrons in CN = 6 ( C ) + 7 ( N ) + 1= 14 e-
  2. EC for CN = KK sigma 2s2, sigma* 2s2, pi2px2, pi2py2, sigma 2pz2
  3. Bond order of CN = 1/2 ( 8 – 2 ) = 3

What is bond order of BN heteronuclear diatomic molecule

  1. Total number of electrons in BN = 5 ( B ) + 7 ( N ) + 1= 12 e-
  2. EC for BN = KK sigma 2s2, sigma* 2s2, pi2px2, pi2py2
  3. Bond order of BN = 1/2 ( 6 – 2 ) = 2
