Oxides of Nitrogen

Nitrogen forms a number of oxides with different oxidation States. In the table above the names formula and methods of preparation of different nitrogen oxides are given. As well as their physical properties of some nitrogen oxides are given above.

Nitrogen forms basically six types of oxides –

Dinitrogen monoxide nitrogen 1 oxide

The oxidation state of Nitrogen in dinitrogen mono oxide or nitrogen [1] oxide is + 1                                                                                Di nitrogen monoxide can easily be prepared by heating ammonium nitrate. This dinitrogen monoxide is a colourless gas and neutral as well.

Nitrogen monoxide Nitrogen 2 oxide

Oxidation state of Nitrogen in Nitrogen monoxide is + 2 Nitrogen monoxide can be prepared by reacting sodium nitrite ferrous sulphate and sulfuric acid. Nitrogen monoxide is a colourless gas, neutral as well as paramagnetic in nature.

Dinitrogen trioxide N2O3

In Dinitrogen trioxide oxidation state of nitrogen is + 3 dinitrogen trioxide is blue solid and also show acidic properties.  Dinitrogen trioxide can be prepared by heating nitric oxide and tile nitrogen tetroxide at 250 k

Nitrogen dioxide NO2

In Nitrogen dioxide or nitrogen (IV) oxide the oxidation state of nitrogen is + 4 Nitrogen dioxide can be prepared by heating Lead nitrate at 673 K. Nitrogen dioxide is a brown gas, reactive, paramagnetic in nature and shows acidic properties also.

Dinitrogen tetroxide  nitrogen IV oxide

In dinitrogen tetroxide the oxidation state of nitrogen is + 4 Dinitrogen tetroxide can be prepared by cooling dinitrogen oxide and vice versa. This dinitrogen tetroxide is a colourless gas which exist both in solid as well as liquid state with NO2 in equilibrium. Also, Dinitrogen tetroxide is is acidic in nature.

Dinitrogen pentoxide nitrogen V oxide

In Dinitrogen pentoxide the oxidation state of nitrogen is + 5 dinitrogen pentoxide can be prepared by reacting nitric acid with p2O5. So, Dinitrogen pentoxide is unstable as gas. Dinitrogen pentoxide is colourless as well as acidic.

In the second chart given above there are some Lewis structures main resonating structures and bond parameters of some oxides of Nitrogen.

Dimerisation of NO2

NO2 contains odd number of valence electrons. Therefore, NO2 shows paramagnetic behaviour so it easily dimerises to form stable N2O4 molecule. In N2O4 molecule there are even number of electrons so it becomes diamagnetic.
