What is Lewis dot structure and How to draw lewis structure of CO3^2- ion

Lewis dot structure is the representation of the molecule having bonding and non-bonding electron pairs. Here, we will discuss how to draw it for different molecules and ions.

What is Lewis-Langmuir concept

  1. The covalent bond is formed by the mutual sharing of electrons between 2 atoms. Every atom tries to complete its octet.
  2. Covalency is the number of shared pair of electrons between 2 atoms. It may be 1,2 or 3.
  3. Single line, double lines or multiple lines shows the single, double and triple bonds.

How to draw the Lewis dot structure of homo-atomic and heteroatomic molecules

  1. Calculate the total of valence electrons of all atoms in a molecule.
  2. Select the central atom and terminal atoms.
  3. Place one shared pair of electron between 2 atoms.
  4. Use remaining electrons as multiple bonds to complete the octet of each atom.
  5. Here, are few examples as given below:

How to draw the Lewis dot structure of ions

  1. Calculate the total number of valence electrons of skeleton molecule.
  2. Add or subtract the electrons accordind to anion or cationic charges.
  3. Draw the skeleton structure as stated above.
  4. Complete the octet of each atom in the molecule.

Similarly, you can draw the Lewis structure of NO2- , NO3- , SO4^2- ions.

FAQ’s on Lewis dot structure

  1. What is the basic principle of drawing Lewis structures ?

Answer: These are simplified drawings of arrangement of electrons around the atoms in a molecule.

2. What is Lewis dot symbol ?

Answer : It is the chemical symbol of the element having valence electrons surrounding the atom.

3. What is lone pair and bond pair ?

Answer : Lone pair is the electron pair that does not participate in bond formation. Bond pair is electron pair that participates in bond formation.
