What are oxidising agent and reducing agent P block elements Class 12

Notes on oxidising agent and reducing agent p block elements class 12

OXIDISING AGENTOXIDISING AGENT

Here, is the explanation of the notes explained below 👇

Oxidising agent and reducing agent P block elements class 12

Oxidising Agent p block elements class 12

An Oxidising agent is a species that oxidises the other species and itself gets reduced.

Tricks of finding oxidising agent in the reaction.

• Addition of oxygen in other species

• Removal of hydrogen, loss of electron or increase in oxidation state in itself.

Reducing Agent p block elements class 12

A reducing agent is a species that uses other and itself gets oxidised.

Tricks to find reducing agent in a reaction –

• Addition of hydrogen in other species

• Removal of hydrogen, loss of electron or increase in oxidation state in itself.

P block Elements Oxidising agent and reducing agent

• Which is stronger reducing agent among SbH3 or BiH3

Among SbH3 or BiH3 the stronger reducing agent is BiH3

Bi is larger than Sb therefore, the bond strength of Bismuth hydrogen bond is lower than antimony hydrogen bond. Therefore,  Bismuth hydride breaks easily to release H2. So, BiH3 is stronger reducing agent than SbH3

• Which is the reducing agent Bi (V) and Sb (V)

Bi (V) is the stronger oxidising agent than Sb (V)

The reason is, Bi (V) is a stronger oxidising agent and has more tendency to get converted into Bi (III)

• Why Halogens are strong oxidising agent ?

Halogens are strong oxidising agent because of their low bond dissociation energy, high electronegativity and large negative value of electron gain enthalpy.

• Why H3PO2 is a strong reducing agent and H3PO4 is not a reducing agent ?

H3PO2 is a strong reducing agent and H3PO4 is not a reducing agent.Because in H3PO2 there are two P – H bonds which shows its reducing property while in H3PO4 there is no P – H bond present in it.

• Why ozone acts as a powerful oxidising agent ?

Ozone is a powerful oxidising agent as it gives atomic or nascent oxygen upon dissociation.

• How SO2 acts as a reducing agent ?

SO2 acts as a reducing agent which reduces Fe3+ to Fe2+ and itself gets oxidised to SO4 2-
