P BLOCK ELEMENTS

Here is the explanation of the notes on allotropes of sulphur in the video given below 👇

Allotropes of sulphur P block elements

So among all the allotropes of sulphur yellow rhombic and monoclinic sulphur are the most important allotropic forms of sulphur.

Rhombic sulphur allotropic of sulphur

The rhombic sulphur is yellow in colour and is readily soluble in carbon disulphide. Specific gravity of rhombic sulphur is 2.06 and melting point is 385.8 K. Rhombic sulphur is insoluble in water but it is soluble to some extent in benzene, alcohol and ether.

Monoclinic sulphur allotropic forms of sulphur

The monoclinic sulphur is the colourless allotropic forms of sulphur which has needle shaped crystals. Monoclinic sulphur is usually formed by melting rhombic sulphur in a dish and cooling till crust is formed. Two holes are made in the crust and the remaining liquid poured out on removing the crust. Needle shaped crystals of monoclinic sulphur which are colourless are formed.

Rhombic sulphur or Alpha sulphur is table below 369 K and it becomes monoclinic sulphur or Beta sulphur above that temperature. Both the allotropic forms of sulphur are stable at 369 K which is called as transition temperature.

Structure of sulphur molecule compounds of sulphur

Both rhombic and monoclinic sulphur has S8 molecules which are packed to give different crystal structures. S8 ring in both the forms is packed and crown shaped structure as shown above in the notes.

At elevated temperatures in vapour state almost 1000 K sulphur partially exist as S2 molecule which has two unpaired electrons in the antibonding orbitals like O2 Therefore S2 also shows paramagnetism in behaviour just like O2 molecule.
