Properties of HNO3 P block elements

Nitric acid is a colourless liquid in its pure form but it becomes yellow due to the presence of impurities like NO2.

HNO3 Nitric acid behaves as a very strong acid in the aqua solution producing hydronium ions and nitrate ions.

The Nitric acid being oxidising agent attacks on most of the metals except noble metals. Noble metals like gold and platinum do not react with nitric acid however dissolve in Aqua regia.

Brown ring test for nitrates

The test is is carried out by adding freshly prepared dilute ferrous sulphate to an aqueous solution containing nitrate ions. Carefully add con H2SO4 along the sides of test tube so that separate layer of brown ring is formed at the interface between the solution and sulphuric acid.

Brown ring thus formed is the indication of the presence of nitrate ions in the solution.

Preparation of HNO3 P block elements

In laboratory nitric acid can be prepared by heating sodium nitrate or potassium nitrate with con H2SO4

On large-scale nitric acid can be prepared by the process called as Oswald’s process. In this method catalytic oxidation of ammonia is done by using atmospheric oxygen with the help of catalyst.

Nitrogen forms 3 oxoacids but the most important in terms of laboratory and industrial application is HNO3.

Uses of Nitric acid P block elements

HNO3 Nitric acid is used in the manufacturing of ammonium nitrate as fertilisers also used as an oxidiser in rocket fuels.

The Nitric acid is used in the preparation of nitroglycerine organic nitro compounds and trinitrotoluene.

Nitric acid is used in the pickling of stainless steel and etching of metals.
