Preparation of Sulphur dioxide SO2 Group 16 elements

SO2 can be prepared by burning sulphur in air or oxygen. In the laboratory it can be prepared by treating sulphide with dilute sulphuric acid. Industrially, Sulphur dioxide can be obtained as a byproduct of roasting of sulphide ores

Properties of Sulphur dioxide SO2 Group 16 elements

Sulphur dioxide is a colourless gas with pungent smell of burning sulphur. Also sulphur dioxide liquifies at room temperature and boils at 236 K

The Sulphur dioxide is highly soluble in water and forms sulphuric acid.

Sulphur dioxide reacts with chlorine to produce sulfuryl chloride in the presence of charcoal.

Also Sulphur dioxide reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium sulphite. And this sodium sulphite again reacts with acid to to form sodium hydrogen sulphite.

The Sulphur dioxide is oxidised to sulphur trioxide in the presence of vanadium oxide.

This Sulphur dioxide when moist behaves as a reducing agent as it converts Fe3+ to Fe2+ ions.

Also Sulphur dioxide also decolourises acidified potassium permanganate KMnO4 solution. Hence this is the confirmatory test for SO2. The reactions are given above in the notes.
